BASN MMCX in-ear monitor headphone reviews

Disclaimer: I received this sample in exchange for my honest opinion. BASN has had no input and have not seen this review prior to posting.

I have been using the BASN MMCX for a couple of weeks now, and I am thoroughly impressed with what they have accomplished. For under a hundred dollars, they were able to create an IEM that can do it all in both the professional and audiophile sphere. It can handle everything from jazz and acoustic music, to EDM and hard rock without flinching. In a similar manner, the MMCX is well suited for stage use providing a natural, yet full presentation for everything from guitars and vocals to drums and bass instruments. In many ways, it provides the best of all options with very few compromises to hardware and tuning.

Like many of the offerings from BASN, the unboxing experience is excellent. Beyond the IEMs, you are provided a robust set of accessories. You get multiple sets of tips, including foam tips. You are also provided with a zip-up hard case and two cables, including one with an inline mic and volume control to pair with your phone or preferred device. On top of this, you are also given a 3.5mm to 6.4mm adapter, an IEM cleaning brush, and a cable clip to cable manage your IEMs. This is well above and beyond what you usually receive at this price point and provides a strong value add.

The sound of these IEMs can be described as warm-leaning neutral. The entire spectrum is well represented with notable aspects being the better than average bass response combined with a strong vocal range and smooth, yet clean, treble profile. It does this without sacrificing detail or staging. Instruments are accurately placed and well defined. Bass is punchy and hard hitting. Details are able to shine through without being overwhelmed by any part of the frequency response. This is one of the best tuned IEMs I've tried from BASN with no EQ needed out of the box for music listening.

With all of this praise, I need to mention the shortcomings that I feel the MMCX has. Fortunately, they are not deal-breakers for me. First and foremost, there is occasional driver flex. This primarily happens when inserting the IEMs into your ears, but may also occur if making adjustments when pushing the IEM deeper into your ear canal. It is not bad, but it is noticeable and can be distracting at times. Another much smaller issue is the size of the soundstage. While separation and placement is immaculate, and detail is exceptional for the price, the size of the soundstage is somewhat constrained when compared to other offerings from BASN. Notably, the BMaster5 and newer BMasterX. These are more expensive IEMs, but if soundstage is of high importance to you, you may want to check out these other options. That being said, this is more of a nitpick and the size is on par, or better, than most of the IEMs I have tried at this price point.

For those of you who will be using these IEMs for stage work, the sound isolation of these IEMs is absolutely incredible. They are some of the best isolating IEMs I have used, regardless of price point. This was made even better when tip-rolling to the SpinFit CP145 in size small. The benefit of this is that you can listen at lower volumes while still blocking out external sound. They are better than some earplugs I have tried, they are that good.

As much as I wasn't expecting to, these IEMs will definitely be entering the rotation along with my often used IEMs. They are one of a few sets that are a jack of all trades. They are pretty much good at everything I have thrown at them. From Aphex Twin to Dave Matthews Band, Miles Davis to System of a Down. The MMCX could handle them all. I can easily recommend the BASN MMCX IEMs. They are a great set that should make most users extremely happy for years to come.
